Hats Off…

…to the wonderful teachers at the Beethoven School and the Ohrenberger School in West Roxbury, MA. What a pleasure to witness teachers who are doing such a great job promoting literacy. Thank you to the Parent Council for inviting me to be a Guest Author!
At the Beethoven School (K-2) I read my book What's Up with This Chicken?
At the Beethoven School I read my book What’s Up with This Chicken? to groups of K1, K2, first and second graders. They laughed at all the egg puns.

When I explained my writing process, I was blown away by how familiar the students – even the 4 year olds! – were with writing terms! I asked a group of 5 year olds, “Are you sure you’re not really 12 years old?” They assured me they were not.

The next day, at the Ohrenberger School, I did interactive sessions with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders about how to convey character and how to revise. So many students volunteered enthusiastically to share their responses to writing prompts.

In both schools students were attentive, polite and engaged. Teachers had read students my books in advance, which made a positive impact on eagerness to participate.
Hats off to the teachers, principals and parent volunteers!
